You know it’s natural for everyone – children and adults alike to be outdoors. Even the most “indoor” person is drawn to nature. The fresh air, sunshine, rich earthy smells, all the sounds, and sights of beauty – it’s calling us all. Studies have shown that time spent in green spaced reduces stress, encourages cooperation and compassion, helps with focus, inspires creative thinking, and has a myriad of health benefits. You might be thinking that’s great but I’m busy, my family is busy, our schedules don’t give us a lot of free time. To that I say – make the time; make outdoor experiences throughout the year a priority. The whole family’s health and wellbeing will be boosted.
It can start right in your own backyard or local park. Enjoy the green space. Relax and rest or be active – it’s your choice. Babies and toddlers love to explore so let them have a space to do so. Older children enjoy having room to run and play games. Children don’t need a lot to come up with things to do and will create their own play activities without much prompting.
You don’t need a lot of equipment to have a great time outdoors. A “home base” blanket in a shady spot can serve as a resting and gathering place. Having a ball, a few sand toys or a magnifying glass may all you need to get things rolling. If you are away from home having water and a snack can go a long way. While you are at it this can be a great time for a family picnic.
One of the benefits of being outdoors is deeper and restorative sleep for everyone. Even as little as 30 minutes outdoors each day can provide a refreshing and restorative sense of wellbeing to each of us. This is true throughout the year. Making outdoor time a priority for you, your children and your family will benefit everyone in so many ways. Get out and enjoy!
