Parents are often challenged with getting babies to sleep in safe and healthy ways. Keep these tips in mind for a successful sleeping environment for your infant.
- Sleeping on their backs ONLY!
- NOTHING in the crib. Mattress, crib sheet, and baby ONLY! No “lovies”, blankets, pillows or bumpers. Just a tight fitted sheet.
- Room temperature should be between 68 to 72 degrees F and they should not be wrapped too warmly so they don’t overheat.
- Use specific swaddle blankets or sleep sack. A loose blanket is a risk for suffocation.
- Do not bed share! It is not worth the risk! Have a bassinet or their crib close to your bed if you want them near you.
- Do not smoke near your baby. Being exposed to second-hand smoke is harmful to their developing lungs.
- No sleeping in Rock-in-Play, swings, or car seats (when not in the vehicle).
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies should always be on their backs in safe cribs.
