What Is A Newborn Care Specialist?

We all get the question – “what do you do?” You may struggle to find exactly how to explain what you do or perhaps your title says a lot about what you do, but more often we need to explain further. While – Newborn Care Specialist (NCS) – seems fairly self-explanatory there are a lot of aspects which are less obvious but important to families looking for support and help with their babies.

At its essence, an NCS specializes in caring for newborns and babies for a time period specified by parents needs. For instance, some parents are looking for help in the first few months of their newborn’s life on a schedule agreed upon. Other parents are expecting multiples and know that they’ll need extra help in the first few weeks. Still, other parents would like someone to help them get their baby or babies sleeping through the night. Or perhaps there is special needs or considerations that parents need help, support, and encouragement getting through. An NCS will guide, educate, and support each family through any number of situations.

NCS professionals work a variety of hours and schedules. Parents may need help determining their needs and how to structure the help they need. Most NCS will also provide extensive consulting services to help parents and families cope or work through certain aspects of caring for their infant. In a consultation, parents receive in-depth information and practical, tested recommendations. There is also often an option for follow-up consultations as needed.

Training and ongoing continuing education is a huge part of being a professional NCS. Specializing in newborn care requires very specific and detailed training. There are a variety of levels of training with the Master NCS being the highest trained level. This level of training requires dedication, focus, determination, and passion over the year-long process. This is in addition to previous training and continuing education. Master NCS have the latest information, recommendations, advice, and skills needed to help parents.
